The Woolen Mills neighborhood developed around the Charlottesville Woolen Mill during the later half of the 19th Century. The mill operated from the mid 1850’s until the 1960’s when it permanently closed. The Mill building still stands intact at the eastern boundary of the neighborhood along Moore’s Creek. The Woolen Mills Chapel was built in the 1880’s to provide worship and a meeting space for the mill workers. Today, it continues to serve as a house of worship and meeting place for the neighborhood.
Meade Park is a major recreational and community center with a playground, waterpark and Wednesday Farmer’s Market available in the warm-weather months. Riverview Park and the Rivanna Greenbelt Trail offer walking and cycling opportunities through riverside forests and fields.
